I am studying to do an Associated Board of the the Royal College of Music exam on the piano.I have been practicing the pieces for a long time and am quite sick of them. Then there is all the technical stuff, scales and arpeggios.
I don’t even refer to the pieces by their name or composer only the number assigned to each by the College.
I was talking to a music teacher recently who really abhors these exams. For as he sees it creativity in children is held in check and they may even lose interest in music.
It seems music is treated like any other subject in school, you learn stuff parrot fashion just to get the certificate, but then what?
But what is the alternative if you want to put in place a structure for learning music in schools.
A tricky one.
Any thoughts?
